Youth Training Institute (YTI) at DCTV: Developing Future Leaders in Media
YTI empowers youth voices by utilizing new media technologies to facilitate forums of expression. From citizen journalist and bloggers to documentary filmmakers, YTI provides curriculum training and resources to educate the next generation of media makers ages 14-17.
What is the Youth Training Institute (YTI) at DCTV?
DCTV’s youth media initiative, created to give young people in the DC Metro area the opportunity and space to learn, understand and create media to make positive changes in the Washington DC community.
What does YTI do?
YTI empowers youth voices by providing forums for expression for youth, which includes the development and productions of programs, and helping young people become engaged in our community through creative expression and various uses of media.

Who can participate?
Youth ages 14-17 who are enrolled and in good standing at a high school or middle school in the DC metro area.
How do I become a YTI member?
- Complete application.
- Submit the recommendation form.
- Submit a photocopy of government issued or school ID.

YTI Customized Curriculum Development and Training
DCTV works to create customized training programs for organizations that serve youth. DCTV designs specific activities to teach students how to produce a project for the organization as they are learning media production and media literacy. The product could be a short documentary, a public service announcement or any other media project designed by the nonprofit.
Internship
Interning at DCTV gives students the opportunity to further develop professional and practical skills in various areas like production, editing, graphic design and information technology. DCTV’s internship program provides students with work experience that complements their education, while developing the skills needed to pursue employment in the media industry.
DCTV Kids Camp
DCTV Kids Camp is a unique media arts summer experience for youth in the DC metropolitan area, ages 11-15. In partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, DCTV created a vigorous media literacy and production curriculum, which includes art and media literacy instruction and field trips to local museums. Youth participants from local organizations explore art interpretation and create pieces that express their impressions using media tools.
